My Story

My story

I have always been interested in mental health, as I was born in a country where war, bombings, and gun shots were and still a reality. My father was injured in a bomb explosion in Afghanistan, and my family had to suddenly leave and seek refuge in India, where I spent most of my adolescence.

After restarting my life in a new country with new languages and culture, I started in a new school. Although my parents had limited resources to afford the good things in life in a foreign country, they did send me to a private school. I had to push myself to get good grades in a language that I couldn´t communicate with. I was very dedicated to make this work and get good grades since I didn’t want to create any problems for my parents, who were going through a lot already. I pretty much followed this formula my entire life: “Don’t be a hassle for anyone and don´t ask for help”.

Years later, I never thought I’d have to start my life over again with an entirely new set of rules in Denmark. Even though I didn’t understand what was happening at the time, being witness to war, changing countries and starting all over again, the ripple effects were profound.

It all started with my divorce, which left me as the sole provider for my family. In 2012, I started exploring my own mental health and began the psychotherapy journey.

I later specialized in trauma counseling, particularly for those who experienced trauma in childhood. My own journey of self-discovery led me to realize that I have ADHD and Complex PTSD.

Today I create content on social media about mental health awareness.

My identity

I was given the name Mahbooba at birth, but I changed it later to Mia. I am a multicultural woman who was born with fair skin and Persian features. I am also a mother of two teenagers. I unjustly benefit from my height, being thin, and fair skin “privilege”.

I don’t have any physical disabilities and my ADHD is not visible to most people. I was actually discovered to have ADHD very late in life, to which I am both grateful and resentful for. I grew up in a different cultural setting with my parents providing enough for food, housing, and healthcare. Besides my psychotherapy diploma, I also hold two more degrees. A bachelors degree in Business and Management and a diploma in Computer Science. I have spent most of my life living in capital cities where I have had access to diversity and culture.

I feel it is important to mention these things as they have had an impact on how I see the world and how the world sees me. I am constantly working to examine my own biases and acknowledge the privileges I have that I have not earned, in an effort to try and cause the least amount of harm possible.

My intention

The purpose of sharing my story is to demonstrate that nobody is alone in their struggles, that recovery is worth the effort, and I support the worldwide movement towards awareness, acceptance and care for those affected by mental health issues.

In my practice, I work with clients from all over the world in 1:1 sessions. While many therapists emphasize symptom reduction and behavioral changes, I use my training in developmental trauma from NARM institute to heal the trauma driving self-destructive patterns and troubling symptoms.

In my experience, when the trauma is effectively addressed, behaviors changes organically and the symptoms resolve themselves.

" Don't wait - start your journey today!"

" I'm grateful for my recovery and honored to help others heal. It's a privilege to be able to help people in their own healing process, and I take this privilege seriously, maintaining confidentiality and ethics."

My promise

I am aware that I have the ability to make positive changes in the world. I will use my power and influence in the mental health field to help make the world a better place.

I am dedicated to providing fair and respectful treatment to all my clients. I am committed to continuous learning, both in my personal and professional life. I believe in building strong relationships and you can always expect me to be warm and friendly. I genuinely care about your wellbeing and your progress in self discovery.

I believe that by experiencing the encouragement and empathy you’ll find in session with me, your journey toward healing and wholeness will find greater success.
